abba Hoteles Commitment to Sustainabbility
June 5th: A Date for Global Awareness
Every year on June 5th, World Environment Day is celebrated—an initiative driven by the United Nations aimed at raising awareness about the importance of protecting the planet and promoting more sustainable development across all areas of society.
In a global context shaped by the need to reduce environmental impact and move toward more responsible models, this date invites us to reflect on the role that companies, individuals, and institutions play in building a more balanced future.
The tourism sector, by its very nature, has a direct responsibility in preserving the environment. Therefore, moving toward more sustainable management models is not just a trend, but a real and urgent necessity.
Sustainabbility: The Way of Understanding Sustainability at abba Hoteles
At abba Hoteles, we integrate sustainability under the concept of “Sustainabbility,” a strategic and brand value that defines how we operate, grow, and evolve as a company.
Sustainabbility represents a global vision that integrates environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria across all areas of the organization, with the goal of generating a real and measurable positive impact.
This approach allows us to move toward a more responsible hotel industry, where every decision matters and every process is part of a common strategy for continuous improvement.
Our actions are structured around four main pillars:
-
Sustainable Sourcing
-
Environment
-
Waste Management
-
People / Society
Sustainable Sourcing: A Responsible Value Chain
We understand sustainability as a commitment that encompasses the entire value chain. Therefore, we work with suppliers aligned with our principles, prioritizing those who incorporate environmental, social, and ethical criteria into their processes.
We promote responsible purchasing agreements and collaborate with partners who share our vision, integrating ourselves into their sustainability plans and promoting products with responsible certifications and processes.
Our key lines of work include:
-
Collaboration with suppliers who have active recycling and waste minimization programs.
-
Incorporation of organic, vegan, and low-environmental-impact products.
-
Driving energy efficiency throughout the supply chain.
-
Reducing packaging and committing to more sustainable solutions.
Environment: Efficiency, Decarbonization, and Responsible Energy
One of our main commitments is the continuous improvement of energy efficiency and the reduction of our activity’s environmental impact. To achieve this, we develop actions aimed at optimizing resource consumption and progressively reducing our carbon footprint, including Scopes 1, 2, and 3.
Our key areas of action include:
-
Analyzing energy, water, and fuel consumption to establish improvement plans.
-
Implementing energy efficiency systems adapted to hotel operations.
-
Decarbonization processes to reduce the impact of our activity.
-
Incorporating renewable energies such as solar thermal, photovoltaic, and geothermal energy.
-
Continuous optimization of water and electricity consumption.
Waste Management: Towards a Model of Maximum Circularity
Waste management is a core pillar of our Sustainabbility strategy. Our goal is to move toward a circular economy model that prioritizes reduction at the source, reuse, and recycling as the foundation of daily operations.
We work alongside specialized entities to develop joint strategies that allow us to continuously improve in this area.
Our key actions include:
-
Progressive waste reduction through data measurement and analysis.
-
Selective separation and optimization of waste streams.
-
Reducing the use of virgin raw materials.
-
Promoting recycled, recyclable, and reusable materials.
-
Digitalizing processes to reduce unnecessary consumption.
People / Society: A Commitment to People
Sustainability is not only understood from an environmental standpoint, but also a social one. At abba Hoteles, we work to generate a positive impact on people and the communities in which we operate, reinforcing our commitment to ethical, inclusive, and responsible management.
This approach translates into:
-
Collaboration with social entities and foundations.
-
Promoting inclusion initiatives and support for vulnerable groups.
-
Promoting a responsible and participatory corporate culture.
-
Alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Plastic Reduction and Sustainable Dining: Three Key Practices
Within our sustainability strategy, we develop three lines of action that are particularly relevant to the day-to-day operations of our hotels:
1. Reduction of Plastics and Single-Use Materials We have eliminated single-use plastics in areas such as guest rooms and catering, significantly reducing the environmental impact of our operations. Additionally, we have replaced single-dose formats with higher-capacity, lower-impact alternatives, and incorporated refillable or bulk dispenser systems, while always maintaining a refined experience consistent with our brand identity.
2. Selection of Sustainable Suppliers Sustainability is built through collaboration. Therefore, we prioritize suppliers who share our commitment, working with them on the continuous improvement of processes and the incorporation of environmental and social criteria throughout the supply chain.
3. Sustainable Dining We hold the ECOFOODIES certification, which endorses our commitment to healthier and more responsible gastronomy. Our culinary offering is based on sustainable purchasing and a balance between quality, health, and respect for the environment, promoting:
-
Vegan and vegetarian options.
-
Local and zero-kilometer products.
-
Certified organic products.
-
Animal welfare and reduction of environmental impact.
Every Action Counts
On this World Environment Day, we at abba Hoteles reaffirm our commitment to Sustainabbility as a fundamental pillar of our strategy. A commitment that translates into real actions, conscious decisions, and a more responsible, sustainable, and future-oriented way of understanding hospitality.
Because every action counts. And because the future of tourism is built today.
